Position Summary:
• The Director of Christian Education position is to serve the congregation, pastor, staff, and committees of Grace UMC for the purpose of resourcing, training and providing learning opportunities that lead to spiritual growth within the church. The Director of Christian Education will serve as a member of the church staff and will oversee the overall Discipleship pathway of our Christian education program. The principal function of the Director of Christian Education will be hands on leadership of the Youth and Young Adult Ministry of the church with oversight of the Children’s Ministry area. The specific duties will be outlined below. The Director of Christian Education will be required to perform duties of the position in accordance with this job description, the Employee Handbook, and all applicable Grace UMC policies and procedures. Duties may be modified in consultation with the Pastor and the SPRC.
Job Description:
The Director of Christian Education shall be considered .75 time position, working 30 hours a week. Approximately 3-5 hours with Morningside College and the remaining hours with Grace UMC. The work schedule shall be agreed upon by the Pastor and SPRC.
Primary Responsibilities:
• To be familiar with basic teaching practices, methods of teacher training, curriculum and resources available.
• To recruit, train, and support volunteers to carry out the teaching and leading of Spiritual Formation of the church for all ages.
• To provide opportunities for Spiritual Formation including Sunday school classes, Bible studies, small groups, special events, retreats, and or other gatherings for all ages of the church.
• To be involved with the Children’s Ministry of the church as needed with the Children’s Ministry Coordinator reporting to this position.
• To lead and develop a Youth and Young Adult Ministry.
• The Director of Christian Education will serve as a staff liaison to the Christian Education Team, the Council of Ministries, Church Council and other teams/committees as assigned by the pastor and the SPRC.
• Need to be available Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings.
• Attend weekly staff meeting.
• Keep regular scheduled office hours.
• Keeps congregation well informed about the church’s educational ministries by bulletin boards, Sunday Bulletin, Chimes, church website and social media.
• Attend monthly Christian Education committee meetings and Children’s Ministry meetings.
• Conduct Safe Sanctuary training for volunteers.
• Ensure that volunteers that work with the youth meet the requirements of Safe Sanctuary.
• Be involved in church activities.
• Encourage and train youth in assuming leadership roles and planning responsibilities in weekly meetings and other programs.
• Encourage and assist Children, Youth, and Young Adults in participating in all facets of the church’s life and work.
• Plans and leads trips and off-site activities designed to foster spiritual growth and provide opportunities for fellowship through fun and recreation.
• Provide church content to Morningside College campus pastor for their newsletter
• Work with the Children’s Ministry coordinator regarding the work study students.
• Coordinate the Midnight Breakfast Events.
• Meet the requirements to pass the Safe Sanctuary screening.
Education Requirements:
The Director of Christian Education recommendation is to have one of the following:
• A college degree in Christian Education.
• A college degree in Education with additional studies in Christian Education.
• A college degree in another area with additional studies of Christian Education.
• Formal training in Education with a passion to teach Christian Education.
Skills:
The Director of Christian Education should have basic knowledge and skills in the following areas:
• Good writing skills.
• Good computer skills.
• Utilizing websites and social media.
Personal Attributes:
The Director of Christian Education must be a person who possesses:
• A work ethic that is both positive and team oriented.
• A work manner that is dependable and conscientious with the initiative to plan and complete all required responsibilities with little supervision and in a timely manner.
• Organizational skills to effectively and efficiently carry out the work of this position.
• A Christian with a strong commitment to following Jesus Christ.
• Energy, enthusiasm, and creativity in Christian Education and Spiritual Formation.
• Capability to work successfully as part of a ministry team with other staff members and elected lay ministry leaders.
